There is a large market in inexpensive advertising balloons, and it exists because the headline price works. A few hundred dollars for something that flies is an easy yes. Then it fails, and the buyer concludes that advertising balloons do not work. This page is about what separates the two ends of this market, so you can decide which one you are actually buying.

The material is the whole story

Cheap balloons are **PVC**. Serious ones are **polyurethane**. Almost everything else follows from that.

PVC is inexpensive, easy to weld, and it fails outdoors in two specific ways.

**Ultraviolet light breaks it down.** Sustained sun makes it brittle and chalky. In a high-sun climate this happens fast — a single Arizona or Texas summer is enough to change the material.

**It holds a fold.** Pack a PVC balloon away for a month and the crease becomes a permanent weak line. Deflate and re-inflate it a few times and it fails along that line.

Polyurethane handles UV far better and recovers from folding rather than remembering it. That is why a polyurethane balloon can be flown, deflated, stored flat and flown again for years. Customers are still flying units bought **fourteen years ago**.

If a supplier will not tell you the material, that is the answer.

The artwork line item

Compare quotes carefully, because “balloon price” and “balloon price with your branding on it” are frequently two different numbers.

A 13-foot advertising blimp at **$1,526 includes full-colour artwork on both sides**. Not an upcharge, not a setup fee, not a per-colour surcharge. The panels are white specifically so that printing reproduces nearly any graphic or colour you supply.

A cheaper base price that adds artwork, plates, colour charges and proofs frequently lands in the same place — with a PVC balloon at the end of it.

Cost per flying day is the honest metric

Headline price is the wrong comparison. Work out what a day in the air actually costs.

A $1,526 polyurethane blimp flown across many seasons, still working after years, is a small number per flying day and it keeps getting smaller.

A cheap PVC balloon replaced every season or two never gets past its first year of amortisation. Buy three of them and you have spent blimp money on three disappointments, plus the artwork charges each time, plus the weekends where you had nothing in the air waiting for a replacement.

Where you genuinely can spend less

Wanting to spend less is reasonable. There is a legitimate cheaper option, and it is not cheaper material — it is a **smaller unit**.

A **5.5-foot helium sphere is $350** plus $27 shipping. Same polyurethane construction, same durability, same flying behaviour. It holds about 87 cubic feet of helium — roughly $130 a fill — and one 200 cubic foot tank at about $300 covers about two months of flying including top-offs.

What it does not do is carry a message. A sphere presents a curve from every angle, so text on it is legible from one narrow direction and distorted from the rest. It delivers colour and motion, not words.

So the honest budget answer is: **buy a smaller polyurethane unit, not a larger PVC one.**

Four spheres cost $1,400 and cover a long frontage — often reading better from a moving car than one object does.

Running costs are the same either way

Nobody escapes helium.

Every balloon loses about one percent of its gas per day. That is physics, not workmanship — helium is a small molecule and it migrates through any flexible material. Top off every three to seven days, roughly $2.50 a day of flying on a blimp.

A cheap balloon does not cost less to fill. It holds the same gas at the same price and loses it at the same rate. The only thing you saved on is the part that determines whether it is still flying next year.

Weather loss is not covered, by anyone. Winds forecast over 25 miles per hour, bring it in. Wind does not wear a balloon out; wind loses one — and that is true at every price point.

The short version

The cheap end of this market is not a cheaper version of the same thing. It is a different material with a different lifespan.

If budget is the constraint, buy small and buy properly. Do not buy large and buy badly.
